Photo of The Day: Hottie with a Baby Bump

We've known about the Big News for a few months, that somewhere around September 2, we're going to be responsible for yet one more little Earthling. No word yet regarding boy or girl, but I'm pulling for one of those more than the other. I just won't tell you which, all due respect. Every first time parent says, "Oh as long as the baby is healthy, that's all we want." I said that once. This time, though, I have few more requests. I'll take a non-screamer, please, already got one of the other kind.

As you can see, Brooke's doing well. There were just a couple of weeks there when the smell of coffee and the idea of grilled salmon nauseated her. At night she treats me like a pillow, and it's all good.

So here we are, expecting. Again. It's the first sights of the bump that really make it sink in. And it's also good, because I sure do love babies. Our daughter does little chores around the house and says things like, "I'm helping because I'm going to be a big sister." That's bound to wear off, but I don't know when. Let's hear it for parenthood.

Last weekend we took a two-nighter with friends, and we all pawned our kids off on grandparents. "Adults only, or you can't come," my friend Russ declares. He's like that. But for this trip, it made sense. We went down south to a place few folks believe is in Arizona, the calm fertile valley of Sonoita where there are nearly 12 local wineries. We toured and Brooke played along like a peach and pulled designated driver duty for the rest of us. It feels so pathetically cliché to admit right here that I tossed back wine tastings for a full afternoon while my pregnant wife drove me and our friends around. While it's the truth, it's not as pathetic as it may seem.

At the little charming Rancho Rossa Vineyards — if you too consider the decor of Jimi Hendrix and Neil Young and old rock concert photos charming — I bought two bottles, a grenache and an orange muscat. It had been a long day, a hot day, and we'd had our share of sun in the topless blue Jeep that fetched our sorry keisters around. I may have been a little extra giggly and worn out, but I still had some sensibility. Perhaps. I turned to Brooke as I paid for the bottles and told her, "The grenache I'll share tonight at camp, but we're saving the orange muscat until you can have some."

She has to get through the pregnancy and then breast feeding, but I want her to have a piece of that fun trip we had last week. While wine keeps, the poor thing has to wear her jeans without fastening the top button. Saving her a bottle of one of the best I tasted seemed like the only thing I could do. She tilted her head, struck a smile, and didn't move. It reminded me of being younger than we are.

That night at camp, as we waited for the fire to produce some good grilling coals, I caught this angle of her, her laugh, and her baby bump. Her glow.

Congratulations to both of you! Boy or girl I wish you the best and either way he or she is going to share the same zest for life and exploration that the two of you do. We had boy number two in December and it is amazing how much you forget about having a baby in the house! Getting excited about the smallest milestones and living your life in a sleep deprived fog! Congrats!

AWESOME!!!!!!! Big congrats! We just welcomed our second baby boy! Our only request was a non-screamer as well! That wish has come true thus far and the big brother is EXCELLENT. I think he has calmed down some due to his new responsibilitie s. Better get that Momma some Mountain Mama gear. Let me know if you need a discount code.
