Chicken Corners Trail — "The best way to ruin your upholstery in Moab, Utah"

You'll lean like a green bowler trying to force his ball away from the gutter with the pathetic and futile bend of his torso long after that ball left his hands. It's a long, long fall right here, so that reaction is forgivable if not mockable. You get 400 feet to the bottom here, and it ends at the red clay flow of the Colorado River below. So at least you'll go down with a good view as your last sight before you see the angelic welcome party at the Other Side.

The kicker is that this butt-pucker comes at the very end of the trail. You'll drive along the skyscraper cliffs — jaw droppers — at Kane Creek, and you won't believe the crystal blue skies and sweeping views as you climb over Hurrah Pass and then come down a wicked case of the switchbacks. Otherwise, driving this trail is just another yawning day on the backroads outside Moab, Utah.

Then you come to this. The road narrows to a thin line that you'd swear is no wider than a single tire tread. One side's up against a solid vertical rock wall, and the other side conveniently tips out toward certain death, just slightly, but it's enough to give you a moment of doubt. And the questions race in your head. "If I die here today, do I have enough life insurance to get my kids through college?"

Thanks, Dan. "Getting old is not for cowards" is just what this cat needed to hear today. Come back any time, we'd be richer for it.
