Photo of the Day: The Mystery of Petroglyphs

Hiking in a riverbed with friends, one of us stopped so we all stopped.

"Look at that," someone said.

So we scrambled over a set of boulders and up a hill to get a closer look. As is usual with petroglyphs hundreds or thousands of years old, the only thing we could do was stare and wonder and try to conjure up the story the pictures told. We stood silently in the desert wind on a chilly winter midmorning wondering why this spot, why these shapes, why these boulders. But no one spoke because what good would that do?
