A couple of months ago, my wife and I celebrated 9 years of blissful marriage. Our family took our daughter off of our hands for four days while we rented a studio cabin in the woods, strapped a pair of kayaks to the truck, and took off to keep the flames fanned, if you know what I mean. Our little cottage was 50 yards from the water's edge at a small mountain lake in northern Arizona. We learned how to function without a 4-year-old girl around, which is more difficult than you'd imagine. That included sitting on the porch under the cover of tall ponderosa pines and crisp 80-degree air and reading books. Or talking. Or snoozing. Or snacking. Hard, hard work.

The winds were high and therefore covering the lake with whitecaps, so paddling had little appeal. But we had this rustic porch, this sunlight, these multiple days to ourselves, and this wonderful watermelon. Again, all to ourselves. We felt guilty because we both knew our daughter would probably cry if she knew we were enjoying ourselves so much without her. It was a guilt that we got over right about the moment we sunk our teeth into the juicy red friut.
