My New Little Girl Owns Me, Of Course

She's a week old, and she's awesome. Can't you tell?

The human body is wickedly amazing. My wife started to feel contractions on Thursday, August 30th. They fizzled off by Friday. Then they came back Saturday evening, so we asked my mom to take our daughter Chloe for the night—just in case. Brooke slept terribly with contractions never getting any more consistent than 30 or 40 minutes apart. Sunday morning, on the due date for this little girl, we walked a lap around the neighborhood together and decided to go to breakfast because labor moved along at a slow, slow pace. We went to the little café attached to the hangar at the local regional airport where they pour black coffee, cook with lard, and serve up a stunning Mexican omelette with fiery green chiles.

Brooke had four contractions by the end of the meal.

We checked in to the hospital around 10:00 am, and labor revved its engines for the following hours.

Six and a half centimeters. If you know about birthing babies, you know that the cervix has gotta get to ten centimeters before "push time." Brooke and I worked our pain management techniques for hours, two brief minutes apart every time non-stop, and by the time she'd gotten to six and a half centimeters she was working hard and the clock read 5:30. Another hour and change went by, the pain severely escalated, and the nurse checked her cervix again. "Okay, good job." She said. "You're at seven centimeters."

Oh dear. I thought. That was a hell of an hour to go just a half of a friggin' centimeter.

I can't imagine the pain of labor, but I know that I wouldn't wish it on anybody. This was the point where I sighed relief as Brooke confessed she wanted the magic of an epidural. Seven centimeters and many hard, slow hours getting there. After the doc hooked her up with the feel-good juice, only a little more than an hour passed and she'd progressed to ten centimeters — time to push.

I saw my little girl's head leading the way with her little left hand reaching out. Even the nurse asked the doctor, "Did you see that? Is that her hand?"

She seemingly reached out, showing her hand with a gesture, "I'm right here. Right here."

Her name is Shiloh Elizabeth, she was born at 8:50pm last Sunday night, and she's awesome.

Now. It's unknown as to why Brooke looks so dashing and I look like I've been dragged behind a stagecoach.
