3 Dudes Go Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim in Under 24 Hours in The Grand Canyon

If you've ever hoofed it to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, then you've made friends with the multiplying foot blisters, known well the rock-hard calf muscles and felt the blow to your ego as you do battle with the final set of unending switchbacks climbing out of that monster of a canyon. That's why most folks don't do it at all, and others spread it out. Hike down, camp, hike out after another day or two. Some staunch few can hike it from rim to rim in one go, spending the night on the other side, then trodding back down and up from whence they came.

And even fewer are more insane. A couple of them are my friends, big surprise. They attempt to hike the 44.6 miles rim-to-rim-to-rim in under 24 hours. For fun. This past September, three dudes over 40 years old, Greg, Matt and Uwe, gave it a go while I lay low. I had a get-out-of-jail card with these cohorts as I was rather sleepless with a newborn baby in the house. They let me off the hook.

Here's how it went down:

  • Hiking distance: 45 miles
  • Time on trail: 20 hours 22 minutes (Matt), 20 hours 28 minutes (Uwe), More (Greg)
  • Sum of breaks:  3 hours 20 minutes
  • Elevation gain: +11,000ft
  • Lesson Learned: "Carry a variety of food items. One gets tired of energy bars and gels over 24 hours." - Uwe

It sounds like torture, so why do it at all? I see the appeal. There's no other place on the planet that's like the Grand Canyon, you plunge into millions of years of geological history and explore a slice of it by the power of your feet. It's a hell of a trek.

Quite an achievement, well done! Would have loved to see more pictures or a few POV videos of your journey down, for all of us that will unfortunately never be able to experience it first hand!
