The Sunday Morning Chillax: Dads and Daughters Hike The Inca Trail

Hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, man, talk about the trip of a lifetime. My wife and I did a 7-day backcountry backpack trip in Peru in 2005 that connected with the Inca Trail, ending at Machu Picchu. But that was two years before we had our first child. Now I have two daughters, and though they're much younger than the girls in this video, I get awfully dewey-eyed watching this. Alex Bunn and Scott Booker are two dads who rolled 40, and planned an adventure trip together to hike the world-class four-day 26-mile Inca Trail—and they brought their young daughters along. This short film chronicles the trip in a way that's skillfully part documentary and part scrapbook. It's good.

If 26 miles in four days doesn't sound too hard, the trail is at altitude and loaded with stone stairs and hard hill ascents, the biggest one tops out at 13,800 feet. The trail was used by the Inca Empire for shuttling to and from Machu Picchu, an Inca site tucked high in the Andes and built some time around 1450. Incas abandonded it during the Spanish Conquest, which spared the city from destruction. It remained "undiscovered" until 1911. If you can manage this trek, you should. It's a dive into a beautiful culture, a tough hike among stunning landscape, and ends at one of the world's most expansive and best kept ancient sites. It has it all.

This film gives me a certain tingle in my spine because it's a trip I've done, so it sparks a thousand memories right down to the very same hotel this crew stayed in while acclimating in Cuzco. And I'm also raising two daughters. This is definitely the kind of trip, and short film, that nails the highlights of raising fun girls.

The Sunday Morning Chillax is here while you're enjoying a cup of coffee in the quiet morning as your kids, hopefully, sleep in. No need to read, this is always a video; something to give you happy thoughts about mountains, fresh air, stoke, fun, or being outside. Enjoy. Relax. And, um, not guaranteed to be weekly — hey, you get what you pay for, but it's a dang good bargain.
