Climbing Devil's Tower: Jenn Flemming Ascends America's Classic Climb, Credits Her Parents

If I had to chisel my bucket list down to three things, they'd be cycling across France, rafting the Colorado River, and climbing Devil's Tower. Devil's Tower is a 1200-foot-tall volcanic plug in Wyoming, and it's protected as a National Monument that President Teddy Roosevelt established in 1906. Depending on the route to the top, it could be as many as 6 pitches of climbing, and one route in particular is on the list of 50 classic American climbs. In this short film, we get to follow along as professional climber Jenn Flemming breezes to the top, then reflects on things. She credits her parents for sparking her love of climbing and the outdoors — indeed, they took her on trips to the National Parks when she was growing up, setting the hook early in her life. And how fortunate to come across this short from the National Park Foundation promoting the value of the Parks, either ironically or coincidentally, during our current government shut down that has indefinitely locked up the National Park system. Nevertheless, it does the trick for me, fanning the flames of my desire to claw my way up the dihedrals of the Tower one day.

The Sunday Morning Chillax is here while you're enjoying a cup of coffee in the quiet morning as your kids, hopefully, sleep in. No need to read, this is always a video; something to give you happy thoughts about mountains, fresh air, stoke, fun, or being outside. Enjoy. Relax. And, um, not guaranteed to be weekly — hey, you get what you pay for, but it's a dang good bargain.

My parents, baby brother, husband and I all had a trip to the Black Hills several years ago (pre-baby). My husband and I requested a stop at Devil's Tower, and we tried to climb it. We were traveling through in July, and that Classic Route is on the south side of the tower... hoo boy. It was hot up there. We got 3 pitches up, were running out of water... and I actually heard my mother scream up from the ground below "HOLD ON TIGHT KATY!!" You could hear the panic in her voice. I guess they were hiking around the base and she had just had somebody hand her some binoculars to check out "the crazy climbers." My husband and I looked at each other and then back up at the off-width above us, and decided it wasn't worth it. We bailed.
